Intel Next Generation Processor for Smartphone and Tablets

Intel’s next generation Atom processors with new CPU architecture will be up to three times faster and five times more power efficient than its predecessor chips, and are up in sleeves to break away the common notion that ARM processors are more power efficient- Intel said in a web cast organized for investors and media, reports Times Of India.

The CPU architecture, code named as ‘Silvermont’ will be incorporated in Smartphones, tablets, PCs and servers starting this year and would form the basis for its next-generation Atom microprocessors called Bay Trail and Merrifield.

While Bay Trail, is to appear in tablets by end of the year, Merrifield would be available inside Smartphones in the first quarter of 2014. They will support the Android and Microsoft operating systems.

Currently ARM makes the core technology that is used by companies like Qualcomm, Nvidia, MediaTek, Apple and Samsung to create microprocessors for phones and tablets. Though Intel’s Atom processors which have performance that is comparable to ARM-based chips, they seem to suffer from the lack of interest from companies that make phones and tablets.

Microsoft's operating system nicknamed Windows Blue

The tweaked version of Microsoft's operating system nicknamed Windows Blue will be previewed on June 26 and will be a free update for users as Windows 8.1. The update comes amid a lukewarm reception for Windows 8, an operating system released last year to help the software giant transition from personal computers to tablets and other mobile devices.
The move is part of a goal "of delivering continual updates to create a richer experience for Windows customers," a Microsoft blog post said.

Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc said a public preview of Windows 8.1 will be available starting on June 26, timed with the Microsoft developer conference in San Francisco. Microsoft said recently it had sold than 100 million licenses for Windows 8 but that the update was planned after listening to customers. Some analysts say Microsoft was forced to act because of slow adoption of Windows 8, which made some radical changes to the design of the desktop.
With Windows 8, Microsoft was trying to create a system that could be used on mobile touch screen devices while also serving the users of traditional PCs. Microsoft launched Windows 8 last October, revamping its flagship system in an effort to make inroads in the fast-growing mobile segment. At the same time, it launched its Surface tablet computer.

The Microsoft Surface Tablet

The Microsoft Surface tablet may set a new standard for the tablet industry. Here’s a first look at the new device. The Surface prototype has a 10.6 inch display, framed by a black, beveled chassis made of "vapor-deposited magnesium.” A kickstand folds out from the back of the Surface, a simple innovation that has eluded other tablet makers until now. The Surface even comes with a touch sensitive keyboard that doubles as a display cover, lamping firmly to the display's edges with magnetic fasteners. Two versions of Surf ace will be produced. One will run Windows RT on an ARM processor, while the other will run Windows 8 Pro on an Intel processor. The latter is intended for users who want to run legacy Windows apps; it will include a stylus, too. The RT version of Surface will support 32 or 64 GB of SSD storage, while the Windows 8 Pro version will support 64 or 128 GB. Surface tablets with Windows RT will include a microSD slot, USB 2.0, and a Micro HD port. The Pro versions will have a microSD card slot, USB 3.0, and Min i Display Port. RT devices will weigh about 1.5 pounds and be about 0.36 inches thick.

Surface Pro will weigh closer to two pounds and will be half an inch thick. So what's the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8? They're actually two different worlds. Only software written specifically for Windows RT will run on Surface and other RT platforms. Microsoft calls these "Metro style apps" and will include special versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as apps for a variety of other common tas ks in Windows RT. Third party developers will also supply apps through the Windows Store, similar to the Apple Store, Amazon App Store, and Google Play ecosystems. The Windows software that you're using on your desktop or laptop PC will not run on Windows RT. You'll have to wait for an RT version of your favorite Windows software packages, do without, or go with the more expensive version of the Surface that runs Windows 8 Pro. Two types of cover/keyboards will be available for Surface. The Touch Cover's keys have no "give" while the Type Cover's keys give slightly. The Type Cover is aimed at touch typists. Microsoft says these keyboards (which also include a trackpad) will allow you to type twice as fast as you would on a glass surface.
Surface with Windows RT will be available around October, in time for the holiday shopping season, and the business oriented Windows 8 Pro version will arrive  sometime in January .A price tag somewhere in the range of $500 to $600 is anticipated . The Windows 8 Pro version wil l be priced to be competitive with ultrabooks at around $1000. While the Surface seemed to perform well over WiFi, mobile connectivity specs were conspicuously missing from the Surface announcement.
However, the Surface has dual wifi antennas for "the best possible wifi performance." The company was also mum about battery life. Microsoft is running the risk of alienating its hardware partners by releasing hardware of its own. Possibly, Microsoft has not been entirely happy with the tablets its partners have made, and is trying to show them how it should be done. But they're also running the risk of undermining the ultrabook market, while at the same time, courting them to develop hardware to run their flagship Windows 8 software. Microsoft’s track record in hardware has been spotty. The Xbox is a home run with consumers, but the Zune was a foul ball. Will Surface be a grand slam, providing serious compet it ion for the iPad, Kindle Fire and other Android tablets currently on the market.

Android v/s Symbian

Mobile phone technology has developed in a way that once it was used only to make voice calls and receive voice calls. Now the needs of Mobile users have changed a lot. Owning a mobile phone once used to be luxurious and this has become necessity. New generation mobile users are expecting more features from their phone.
Symbian or Android
Android and Symbian are two open mobile running systems. Though both platforms are open, but the Android OS provides limited openness when the Symbian is certainly open. The qualities of Android reveals the fact that it offers unlimited applications while the Symbian provides restricted. It is primarily considering the platform offers a whole lot much more choices on the subject of user’s productiveness.
The Symbian system is applied by Nokia and other same phones as an running method. A droid is usually a mobile in which the Android running system is used. Android battle or even any mobile operating system battle for that matter.
Android, these are the mobile running systems you might be torn in between. So, by the time the very first Android smartphone was introduced, there were a few Android applications available for downloading. In January 2010, Google unveiled its own Android-based smartphone to compete against other smartphone manufacturers. Nexus One was the first official smartphone by Google.
Belle is consistently the upgrade edition of the Symbian 3 or at the same time identified as the Symbian Anna. Currently, only low-end devices are employing the Symbian OS. Nokia has remained a global marketplace leader that uses Symbian OS. World more than, Nokia dominates the smartphone market, armed with the Symbian running program. Symbian is mostly used in mobile phone manufactured by Finnish enterprise Nokia, which brought the Symbian ltd. According to mobile phones analysts, the future of Symbian phones isn’t very good.

Comparision of Applications for Both Platform

Default web browser can be changed with android where as change of web browser is not possible with Symbian OS. Web Browsing with Android is faster and smooth compared with Symbian OS.
Android OS can support multiple home screens whereas Symbian OS does not support this option. Multitasking is easier with Symbian compared with android.
Android OS automatically downloads all the Google accounts like G mail, g talk, Google contacts and calendar with single signing in of Google account. Users have to download and copy each account separately. Receiving G mail messages is faster with Symbian OS compared with android OS.
Only a part of screen on the corner is used to display notifications of time, battery charging level, signal strength, GPS and Wi Fi etc for android OS and Symbian requires more space to display these entire things making only small space for utility.

Wi-Fi tether for rooted and non rooted android phone

Tethering :

It's one of the most convenient features your smartphone has, yet carriers insist on restricting it. most often refers to using your smartphone as a mobile hotspot. In other words, it lets you connect to the Internet on your laptop, tablet, or Wi-Fi enabled device, using your phone's data connection. Tethering is very useful if you happen to be in an area that has no free Wi-Fi and you need to do your computing on a device other than your phone. In United States, many of the service providers charge their users for tethering the internet connection. The charges vary from 10$ to 30$ depending upon their service providers.United States is the only country in the world where carriers charge you twice for the same internet you already paid for.  In countries like South Korea, Thailand, and the rest of the world, there’s no extra tethering monthly charges to use the wifi tethering feature.Luckily, there are ways to circumvent wifi tether block on most Android smartphones or tablets (that support SIM cards) by installing tether apps.

Rooted Android Phones:

Step 1. Download Wifi Tether TrevE Mod app and install using ES File Explorer (or your favorite file manager app).  Make sure “Unknown Sources” is checked under Settings if it asks you to.Download Wifi Tether TrevE Mod APK
Step 2. Open the Wifi Tether app, hit Menu button and hit “Settings”.
Step 3. Press on “Change Device-Profile”.
Step 4. Choose “Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)”.
Step 5. Choose “Change Setup-Method”.
Step 6. Choose “Netd-Ndc (master)”.
Step 7. Choose “Send Netd Max Client Cmd”.
Step 8. You can set your wifi encryption and SSID here to whatever you’d like.
Step 9. Make sure either “WiFi-driver reload” or “WiFi-driver reload 2″ is checked on.  If wifi tether fails for some reason you can change this to the one you didn’t use.
Step 10. Scroll down and make sure “MSS clamping” and “Routing fix” are both checked on.
Step 11. Turn on tethering by hitting the Wifi icon.
Step 12. You can check logs by hitting Menu button->Show Log.  If you don’t see any errors you are good to go.
Step 13. Now, try connecting to your wifi tether using your computer or another wifi device.  Once connected, it should show up under Access Control. (hit Menu then Access Control)
Step 14. Enjoy your wifi tether without paying carriers twice!
Don’t forget to share this with your friends on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ thx!
Non Rooted Android Phones

Tethering apps for nonrooted phones

PdaNet:
PdaNet is a free download on Google Play, but this only gets you a 14-day trial. After 14 days, the app will block access to secure websites (websites that require a login) unless you purchase the full edition for $15.95.
EasyTether: EasyTether is a USB tethering app, which means it lets you share your phone's data connection with your laptop via a USB cable. It also lets you tether your game console (PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, or Xbox) using PC Internet Connection Sharing (you need to go through a computer first to tether your console). EasyTether has two versions: afree Lite version and a paid $9.99 version.

iPhone 5 trumped Galaxy S4 on user complaints at launch

The iPhone 5 received nearly twice the rate of negative comments at launch compared with the Galaxy S4, but Apple clearly wins in the most important metric of all, according to social media analysts We Are Social.

If you believe the griping on social media, then the iPhone 5 caused the most user angst of the major smartphone releases of the past year.
Social media analysts We Are Social gauged the reaction on Twitter, blogs, and forums following the release of the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Nokia Lumia 920, and BlackBerry Z10. What the research firm found, according to the Daily Mail, was that the percentage of comments about the iPhone with a negative connotation (20 percent, the highest ratio among the four phones studied) was nearly twice that of the rate of negative feelings expressed about the Galaxy S4 (11 percent, the lowest rate out of the four).
Before you accuse anyone of being any particular kind of fanboi, it's worth revisiting the fall of 2012, when the iPhone 5 was launched -- and when Apple found itself ensnarled in an Apple Maps PR nightmare, leading CEO Tim Cook to go so far as to issue a public apology for the half-baked product. The phone's new lightning adapter wasn't exactly universally welcomed by all users, either.

The Galaxy S4, by contrast, has avoided any such debacles that rise to a level of notoriety worthy of a faux New Yorker cover (although the campy media event for the phone's release was certainly a valiant attempt.) It's also worth pointing out that the echo chamber for any flub emanating from Cupertino is quite sizable. When Apple screws something up, word travels fast in these United States -- just a consequence of having one of the most recognizable brands in the world.
Also telling is the finding that much of the online conversation about the Galaxy S4 was driven by discussion of the well ... galaxy of new features introduced with the GS4. Say what you will about the true utility of eye-tracking, hovering fingers over your touch screen, and auto-pausing videos -- the features certainly seemed to keep users distracted from spending much time griping about the relatively cheap feel of the materials used to make Samsung's flagship phone.
In fact, We Are Social reports that 56 percent of online discussions about the GS4 focused on new or different features, compared with 37 percent for the Lumia 920, 29 percent for the iPhone 5, and 27 percent for the BlackBerry Z10.
But before we go drawing the conclusion that the iPhone is totally over, it's important to note what's arguably the most important metric culled from We Are Social's data: The iPhone 5 received more than 10 times the amount of launch day chatter (1.7 million online conversations) than the Galaxy S4 (140,000) did.
So, this would be an appropriate time for iOS fans to type "score" over and over again in the comments below.

Micromax A88 Canvas Music review

Micromax is rapidly expanding its Canvas portfolio and the latest addition is A88 Canvas Music. Available for Rs. 8,499, this smartphone comes with free JBL Tempo headset. The company is also offering Micromax A88 Canvas Music owners unlimited music downloads for three months from M!Live mobile Web application. So is this music phone a smart buy? We find out in this review.

Hardware/ Design
Micromax A88 Canvas Music looks very similar to Micromax A116 Canvas HD. The smartphone has a plastic body with rubberised back for a steady grip. The thin chrome lining at the edges and the well-rounded corners make the smartphone look presentable.
Its curvy back makes the smartphone appear bulkier than it actually is. Canvas Music weighs 136 grams and feels comfortable to hold. It has a 4.5-inch display, which is neither too big nor too small, by today's standards. Most of the front is taken by the screen and there are three capacitive Android buttons - Menu, Home, and Back for respective functions.

Display
The Micromax A88 Canvas Music sports a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 480x854 pixels and a pixel density of 217ppi. This is not one of the best displays we have seen on a sub Rs. 10,000 smartphone. Pictures and videos look washed out and at times it becomes difficult to read text.
The screen is reflective and under sunlight legibility is just about average. The viewing angels are bad. The smartphone lacks the ambient light sensor, and as a result auto-brightness option is missing.
The screen is also a fingerprint magnet and prone to scratches.

Software/ Interface
The smartphone runs Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean). Micromax has skinned some elements of the user interface, such as the app icons and the notification tray.
Even the lock screen appears to be slightly different on the A88 Canvas Music. It offers quick access to dialler and SMS application. The notification tray includes toggles for settings such as Wi-Fi, Brightness, Rotation, Bluetooth, GPS, Data, Screen timeouts and profiles (for alerts and other notifications). The smartphone comes with nine customisable home screens that can be filled with app shortcuts and widgets.
Micromax A88 Canvas Music comes pre-loaded with Micromax's own suite of apps such as HookUp!, M! Zone+ and M! Live. HookUp! is a messaging service while M! Zone+ lets you schedule SMS alerts for various services such as Jokes, Astrology, love tips, Cricket, et al. M! Live is catalogue of over 3 lakhs songs in various languages including English, Hindi, Gujarati and Punjabi.
Trial versions of games such as The DarkMan and Fruit Devil come pre-loaded on this smartphone.

Camera
Micromax Canvas Music comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera along with dual LED flash. The images clicked through the camera in broad daylight are decent. However, the dual LED flash tends to make the images too bright at times. The shots clicked in low-light are a bit noisy. The camera is also capable of capturing videos at 720p HD resolution, which are of average quality.
The Camera app leaves out the Panorama mode, but offers a burst mode. The phone offers three basic modes - Face Beauty, HDR and Photo. The Photo mode allows users to modify settings like exposure, colour effect, ISO and white balance, among others. There's a self-timer of up to 10 seconds as well.
The smartphone also comes with 0.3-megapixel front camera for capturing self-images and doing video chats. The images clicked through the same are grainy.

Performance/ Battery Life
Micromax Canvas Music A88 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6577 processor along with PowerVR SGX531 GPU. The smartphone comes with 512MB of RAM.The experience of playing popular games such as Fruit Ninja, Subway Surfers and Temple Run 2 through this smartphone is average.
As the Micromax A88 Canvas Music comes with a scanty 512MB of RAM, the multi-tasking experience suffers and we experienced lags even while transiting between home screens.
Micromax Canvas Music A88 comes with 4GB of internal storage of which 1.93GB is user accessible. The internal storage can be expanded by up to 32GB through a microSD card.
The phone comes with the native Android browser as well as Chrome and we found that it renders all webpages well.
Micromax is promoting this smartphone as a music phone and is giving JBL Tempo headset as a free accessory along with the device. In addition to this the company is also offering free music downloads through its M! Live app for 90 days.
The native app can play MP3, MIDI, AAC, AMR and WAV audio formats. The music application in itself looks quite basic but it offers equalizer presets along with Bass and Reverb controls. The quality of audio through the JBL headphones is very good. However, the same cannot be said about the speakers of the smartphone.
The call quality of the smartphone is decent.
The phone comes with an 18000mAh battery, and based on our experience, it lasted almost full day with a single charge. We charged the phone in the morning, and with medium to heavy usage, including 1-1.5 hours of phone calls, one email account with push notifications, screen at maximum brightness, playing some music and video clips, Twitter notifications and WhatsApp chats, the phone lasted 8-9 hours. It's also worth pointing out that we were on Wi-Fi throughout the day, and did not use 3G.

Verdict
Micromax Canvas Music A88 is an interesting option for people looking for a good music smartphone on a budget. However, apart from the JBL Tempo headset, this smartphone does not have much to offer.
The competition is the Rs. 10,000 market has increased many folds in the last few months. Currently one can buy a decent quad-core offering by Karbonn, Xolo or Intex on a similar budget.
You are advised to look at Karbonn S1 Titanium (Review), Xolo Q600 and Intex Aqua Wonder (Review) before making your decision.Price: Rs. 8,499

Pros
  • Looks decent
  • The audio output through JBL headset is great
Cons
  • Sluggish performance
  • Low resolution screen
